Let’s create a safer web together!

What If Online Safety Was Proactive Instead of Reactive?

For years, online safety strategies have largely been reactive. Harm happens first (ex. exposure to inappropriate content, cyberbullying, misinformation, digital manipulation) and only then do systems, schools, and families step in to respond.

But what if we changed the starting point?

What if online safety was not about damage control, but about prevention, awareness, and empowerment?

#SafERweb emerges from that exact shift in perspective. Co-funded under the Erasmus+ programme, it brings together universities, schools, researchers, and education leaders across Europe with a shared goal: to develop innovative, ethical, and educationally grounded tools that help teenagers navigate digital environments more safely and consciously.

At its core, the project combines three key pillars:

  • A comprehensive ethical and methodological framework that maps existing European policies and responsible AI practices.
  • A Training & Awareness Hub designed to equip educators and school communities with practical tools and knowledge.
  • An AI-based self-assessment and gamification tool that encourages proactive reflection and responsible digital behaviour among young users.

Rather than treating young people as passive recipients of protection, the project recognises them as emerging digital citizens. The aim is not only to shield, but to strengthen critical thinking, digital literacy, and informed decision-making.

Ethics plays a central role in this initiative. In a time where artificial intelligence increasingly shapes online experiences, responsible design, transparency, data protection, and human oversight are foundational. The project therefore integrates ethical considerations at every stage: from research and data collection to tool development and implementation within educational settings.

By aligning innovation with European values and educational priorities, this initiative seeks to demonstrate that technology and ethics are not opposing forces. When thoughtfully designed, AI can become a preventive ally, by supporting schools, empowering families, and by promoting safer digital ecosystems.

Because online safety should not begin after harm occurs!
